Bedside Schwartz eGFR (CKiD 2009)
Also called Schwartz formula, paediatric eGFR, updated Schwartz, 0.413 formula
eGFR in children from height and an enzymatic (IDMS-traceable) serum creatinine: 0.413 × height (cm) ÷ creatinine (mg/dL).
Fill 2 more fields to see the result.
Formula and scoring
eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m²) = 0.413 × height (cm) ÷ serum creatinine (mg/dL). Creatinine µmol/L ÷ 88.4 = mg/dL.
Exam and ward pearls
- The 1976 Schwartz equation used age- and sex-specific k values with older creatinine assays and overestimates GFR with modern enzymatic creatinine; the 2009 bedside k is 0.413.
- Height is needed because creatinine production tracks muscle mass, which tracks height in children.
When not to rely on it
- Derived with enzymatic, IDMS-traceable creatinine; results from other assays are not interchangeable.
- Not validated in neonates/infants under 1 year, acute kidney injury (non-steady state), or extremes of muscle mass.
